Eye to Eye with the wolves in the Lobo Park, Antequera

Are you looking for a new destination for a day out and witness wolves in an exceptional environment that lets no doubt that animal in captivity do have a chance to live in a semi-natural habitat? In Antequera, you find the LOBO PARK a private wolf park where you may look at a wolf eye to eye for the first time in your life.

The park has currently 29 wolves living in 4 different packs and it’s located in the heart of wild Andalucian countryside an hour’s drive from Malaga. It’s where four different varieties of wolf – the Canadian Timber, European, Alaskan Tundra and Iberian – have been given a home. An incredible place, circled by the El Torcal mountain range, it’s probably as close as humans can safely get to untamed wolves.

During the tour, you will meet Daniel, the owner of the Park and experience a unique relationship between man and wolf. He and his partner Alexandra raise their wolf pups with the bottle to socialize them, necessary to lose their natural fear of humans. But it is very important to understand that he does not domesticate the wolves. Therefore you will never see a wolf being submissive when he enters their enclosure, which by the way, are all vastly laid out unlike in many other animal parks.

The wolves will come to greet him or maybe you will even see how one of them rubs its body against the legs of Daniel to share their scent and to make him be part of the pack. Although Daniel does not see himself being part of the pack, he is only a visitor who will not interfere within their pack order. After the joyful ‘greeting ceremony’, you will see that they will go on doing their own thing.

The night tour is special because you have a complete different atmosphere and ambiance. The cooler part of the day makes the animals more active, just as it would be in the wild.

Daniel never becomes tired to answer any questions asked and his vast knowledge of wolves and wild life as such is remarkable. His great sense of humour will definitely give you a very entertaining and unforgettable evening out. And before you leave for the night Daniel will lead you in for a last howl with the wolves.

Since for some a drive back home might be too late, Antequera offers many good and economic hotels and it is worth a visit as well. This typical Andalucian town is known not only for its churches but also for the Dolmens and especially the El Torcal. The remarkable mountain range is unique in Europe and should definitely be on your “to do list” when visiting the region.
