Jimena de la Frontera is an ancient hilltop town built on the side of San Cristobal hill, with many white cottages and buildings clustered around the narrow winding cobbled streets. Some offer holiday accommodation from self-catering to guesthouses and they have been attractively renovated in the traditional style. There are wonderful veiws fromvantage points around the edge of the town as it is situated within the Los Alcornocales Natural Park.

An impressive Roman-Arab castle overlooks the village, which was built over the original site of Oba, an ancient Roman City, and was a very important defensive site between Moors and Christians. When the Moors broke the defences and occupied the castle it was enlarged and made more splendid and is now a declared Historic-Artistic site.

In the 15th century the Sanctuary Reina de los Angeles was built at a distance of about two kilometres from the village, where the image of the town patroness is being conserved. In the region you can find many caves with prehistoric paintings, best known for its schematic art are those found at Laja Alta, a site known as “Los Barracones”.
