Castellar de la Frontera

castillo

Castellar de la Frontera and its surroundings have been a strategic point for many invaders and settlers throughout history.

Incredible ancient fortress dating from the era of the Granada Nazari kingdom which maintains its medieval flavour inside the castle walls. From here you can see the Guadarranque river reservoir below, as well as Algeciras and Gibraltar to the southeast and on clear days the view stretches from the African coast to the well-known White Villages (Pueblos Blancos) in the interior. Around the village can be found numerous cave shelters as well as Roman remains. Nowadays a good number of typical houses in the old town centre are being restored and will be used for rural lodgings; in 1973 almost all their former inhabitants moved to the new Castellar, a village that was founded under Franco and situated in a wide plain.

The Almoraima country estate takes in a large expanse of green woodlands and farmlands. A number of animal species are to be found in the area, such as fallow deer, roe deer, oxen, mountain goats, etc., besides innumerable reptile species. Within the estate is found the Casa Convento la Almoraima, a Mercenary convent dating from the 17th century, nowadays converted into a Hotel & Restaurant.
